Past. Paris, 1837, Thierry Hermès, harness maker, opened a shop for horse trappings and harnesses. Later, the headquarters of the maison was moved to the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it still resides. Of particular note are also the foulards of the French brand.
Present. London, 8 to 27 May 2012: an event-exhibition traces 175 years of history, tradition and charm of leather creations of Hermes, at 6 Burlington Gardens, sister-location of the Royal Academy of Arts. For the occasion, a prestigious team of French artisans will show to visitors the manufacture of handbags and other leather goods ,from near and real-time. The exhibition will feature of some pieces commissioned by the Duke of Windsor for Wallis Simpson, and four bags unique representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales; the proceeds will be donated to the Royal Academy of Arts.
The brand has also announced a slowdown in the pace of opening new stores in 2012 for focus on production given the huge market demand towards their products.
“Of course we’ll not change standards of quality and excellence of the brand, but we will speed up the production. In particular for fine leather goods …” – said Patrick Thomas, CEO of Hermès.
